Researcher (1 year contract only)

The ACMS is now recruiting for a researcher to take an executive role in conceptualising and managing multi-sited research projects related to mobility, urbanisation, conflict, and belonging across sub-Saharan Africa. We intend to make this research appointment at the researcher level. ***Please note that this position is a one (1) year contract only.

DESCRIPTION:

The successful candidate will join a team of established and emerging researchers exploring international and domestic migration; urban governance and transformation; communal violence and its connections to nationalism and belonging. Although migration expertise is not necessary, interest in the subject and experience in conducting research – ideally in partnership with others across the ‘global south’ – is required. The ideal candidate will have participated in large, multi-sited, international, grant-funded research and have knowledge and experience in the administration of such projects. The successful candidate will not only have worked as part of a dynamic and diverse team but will also have demonstrated an ability to work independently in a self-directed manner. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have an established or emerging publication profile that demonstrates an ability to communicate effectively in scholarly, public, and policy forums.

As a team member, the candidate will contribute to conceptualising questions, methods, partnerships, work plans, budgets, and reporting. In the future, the position will be active in seeking new funding and coordinating education and research partnerships across Africa and into Asia and Latin America. There may also be opportunities for engaging in policymaking forums, public debates, and cognate arts and humanities-based initiatives. Post-graduate supervision may also be an option.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in social science or related discipline;
  • Expertise in social research in sub-Saharan Africa;
  • Project management experiences and multiple African languages will be an advantage
