Hankela, E. 2010. Humanity Without Borders: Grounds for Refugees Staying at Central Methodist Mission. [presentation] 26 Feb. 2010. Migration and Society Seminar, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. |
This paper is part of FMSP's Migration and Society Seminar Series and engages the presenter's PhD research on Central Methodist Mission:
"CMM has become well-known to the public due to providing shelter for thousands of homeless people, both foreign nationals and displaced South Africans. Both local and international media has brought these people to our consciousness. Also several researcher have become involved with the church. (And some of you are here.) My question today is: why are these foreign nationals and displaced South Africans staying at this inner city church in Johannesburg? Why are the doors of this particular church open? Before going into the topic I will briefly introduce my PhD project to give an idea of the bigger picture behind this presentation, and say a few words about the Central Methodist Mission in general to give a context for those of you who do not know much about the place."
