Tesfalem Tekleab Araia is a researcher at the African Centre for Migration & Society University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. As part of the ACMS’s Migrant Policy and Practice Initiative (MPPI), he has worked in multiple projects ranging from human smuggling, asylum system, and detention, and he is currently working on mobility, labour, and livelihoods. His research interests explore the linkages between mobility, development, and urbanization in Africa. Tesfalem completed his MA in 2005 at the ACMS and researched on the role of migrant networks in shaping the journeys of migrants. His academic background draw from history, political science and international relations. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Asmara/Addis Ababa University in 2001, and Honours degree in History from Wits University in Johannesburg in 2003. Tesfalem is fluent in English, Tigrigna, and Amharic.
