Governing Migration and Urbanisation in South African Municipalities: Developing approaches to counter poverty and social fragmentation |
At a time when South African municipalities are faced with planning for increasingly diverse and mobile populations, they are often left with little guidance and best practice experience to draw on. In identifying planning for migrant populations as a crucial local governing challenge, South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and the African Centre for Migration and Society (ACMS) at Wits University have joined efforts to address these concerns by providing key stakeholders with up-to-date empirically-based research. The research findings, published in a report entitled “Governing Migration and Urbanisation in South African Municipalities: Developing approaches to counter poverty and social fragmentation” will be presented on:
18 August 2011
at the Professional Development Hub (PDH),
University of Witwatersrand
from 6:00 to 8:00 pm
In particular the following key areas for intervention will be explored:
- Data Collection and Management at the Local Level
- Use of Data in Municipal Policy, Planning and Budgeting
- Improved Coordination in Migration Management
- Continuous Research and Development on Human Mobility
Local Government, research institutions and civil society organisations have been specifically targeted for this launch to open dialogue on how best Local Government can embody its developmental role in planning for both longer-term and transient city-dwellers. Discussing the report will be:
- Amos Masondo, former Johannesburg Mayor and Chairperson of SALGA National Executive Committee,
- Cllr. Vondo, MMC for Human and Community Development of the City of Johannesburg Municipality,
- Pedron Ndwa, Acting Municipal Manager of Musina Local Municipality,
- Aubrey Tshalata, Chief Executive Officer of Private Sector Platform on Migration and Development,
- Edwin Mununga, Head of Administrative Services of NEPAD Planning & Coordinating Agency (NPCA)
- Marc Gbaffou, Chairperson of the African Diaspora Forum
This launch is supported by the Presidency-European Union-funded Programme to Support Pro-poor Policy Development in South Africa (PSPPD) and the Migrating Out of Poverty RPC.
